Quick and Easy Buying Guide

Carat weight: 1 carat = 200 milligrams = 6.5 mm diameter. Doubling weight doesn't double diameter.

Diamond clarity: FL/IF/VVS/VS = super expensive, near perfect. SI = best value if you can check a photo for obvious inclusions (defects).

Color: D-G = colorless, expensive, only if you have money to burn. H-J = best value. Can go lower in gold metal settings than white metal.

Cut: Better cut ratings let more light into a diamond, making it sparkle more. Very important property, don't skimp here.

Set a budget and minimum cut (Premium). Go J color for gold and I/H for white metals. Go searching for SI1/SI2 clarity diamonds at James Allen. Pick a diamond with small/no inclusions. Choose a ring setting and buy it risk-free (60-day returns).

A tiny percentage of buyers will care what this SI1 clarity diamond looks like clarity-wise under a 10x scope, but for most people what matters is whether it will appear "clean" to the naked eye.

Although not quite as perfect a cut as Hearts & Arrows, the Ideal cut of this particular diamond means it is significantly cheaper, because you're not paying a premium for a "perfectly" cut diamond. The SI clarity group of diamonds (which this SI1 clarity diamond is included in) is the place where bargains are found. Try and find a diamond that is "clean" to the naked eye, either by examining the diamond in the flesh, or by checking out an online high resolution photo showing the stone. The size of this diamond is 0.56 carats - but make sure you look for the other diamonds for sale with a similar 0.56 weight that may have a better combinations of properties and price. By using only $1240 on the diamond, one will be able to save more cash to use for other expenses, for example a wedding reception.

This diamond has a girdle described as "Thin to slightly thick", which can have a role in the size and sparkle of a diamond, as written about in my diamond girdle page. This H color diamond is less colored than the lowest normal color gradings of J and below; it's a a balance-point between quality and budget, allowing one to have more in the other Cs of diamonds such as carat size.
