Quick and Easy Buying Guide

Carat weight: 1 carat = 200 milligrams = 6.5 mm diameter. Doubling weight doesn't double diameter.

Diamond clarity: FL/IF/VVS/VS = super expensive, near perfect. SI = best value if you can check a photo for obvious inclusions (defects).

Color: D-G = colorless, expensive, only if you have money to burn. H-J = best value. Can go lower in gold metal settings than white metal.

Cut: Better cut ratings let more light into a diamond, making it sparkle more. Very important property, don't skimp here.

Set a budget and minimum cut (Premium). Go J color for gold and I/H for white metals. Go searching for SI1/SI2 clarity diamonds at James Allen. Pick a diamond with small/no inclusions. Choose a ring setting and buy it risk-free (60-day returns).

Don't try and assess diamond color from a photo - there is no need, since the diamond is an F color - but you should be looking at the photo to assess whether the diamond's SI1 clarity grading is because of any large defects and inclusions.

This diamond's girdle is "Thin to slightly thick", which can have a role in the size and sparkle of the diamond, as explained in my diamond girdle page. This SI1 clarity stone represents potential great value, providing it is eye clean. You can go over the high resolution photo in detail to check whether the diamond presents well from on top, which;this is where it will primarly be seen from. Although not quite as perfect a cut as Hearts & Arrows, the Ideal cut of this particular diamond means it is significantly cheaper, because you're not forking out money for a "perfectly" cut diamond.

For a price of $2850, this diamond is smack-bang in the normal range of diamonds used for diamond engagement ring settings. If you are looking at this diamond and considering whether to improve another property of the diamond which don't affect size, you may wish to reduce the 0.75 carat size of this diamond.

To the unassisted human eye, this F color diamond standing alone appears pure white - there isn't a method to detect any color in it using just the human eye and no other nearby diamonds, or to differentiate it from others within the colorless range.
