Quick and Easy Buying Guide

Carat weight: 1 carat = 200 milligrams = 6.5 mm diameter. Doubling weight doesn't double diameter.

Diamond clarity: FL/IF/VVS/VS = super expensive, near perfect. SI = best value if you can check a photo for obvious inclusions (defects).

Color: D-G = colorless, expensive, only if you have money to burn. H-J = best value. Can go lower in gold metal settings than white metal.

Cut: Better cut ratings let more light into a diamond, making it sparkle more. Very important property, don't skimp here.

Set a budget and minimum cut (Premium). Go J color for gold and I/H for white metals. Go searching for SI1/SI2 clarity diamonds at James Allen. Pick a diamond with small/no inclusions. Choose a ring setting and buy it risk-free (60-day returns).

This diamond's girdle ("Medium to slightly thick") has an effect on the diamond; don't ignore it completely. While not quite as perfect a cut as Hearts & Arrows, the Ideal cut of this diamond means it is significantly cheaper, because you're not paying a premium for a "perfectly" cut diamond. To the unassisted human eye, this F color diamond standing alone appears completely white and pure - there isn't a method to detect any color in it using only the naked eye without nearby diamonds, or to identify the differences between it and others within the colorless range. If you eyeball this 1.04 carat stone and immediately say, "that carat size is too small", think about whether it's possible to compromise by lowering other properties, for example color or cut in order to go for a bigger diamond. Throwing $9350 towards a diamond nets one a diamond well above the cut, such as this diamond. A tip: sanity check that you're happy spending the money.

VS is an abbreviation for Very Slightly Included - this VS1 clarity diamond has some minor inclusions that may or may not be easy to see under 10x magnification, but almost never visible with the naked eye - but it can occur occasionally.

You don't want a million answers as much as you want a few forever questions. The questions are diamonds you hold in the light. Study a lifetime and you see different colors from the same jewel. Richard Bach .
