Quick and Easy Buying Guide

Carat weight: 1 carat = 200 milligrams = 6.5 mm diameter. Doubling weight doesn't double diameter.

Diamond clarity: FL/IF/VVS/VS = super expensive, near perfect. SI = best value if you can check a photo for obvious inclusions (defects).

Color: D-G = colorless, expensive, only if you have money to burn. H-J = best value. Can go lower in gold metal settings than white metal.

Cut: Better cut ratings let more light into a diamond, making it sparkle more. Very important property, don't skimp here.

Set a budget and minimum cut (Premium). Go J color for gold and I/H for white metals. Go searching for SI1/SI2 clarity diamonds at James Allen. Pick a diamond with small/no inclusions. Choose a ring setting and buy it risk-free (60-day returns).

An untrained eye won't see the color in this H color diamond, except if the stone is held up against a diamond with say a D color rating (something to think about if you're going for a 3 stone ring). To get some additional pointers on the "Thin to medium" girdle for this diamond, have a read of the article I wrote on girdle thickness. In analyzing the $5610 cost of this diamond, put in some thought into whether you need all the properties to be as good as they are. This diamond's Ideal cut rating indicates it has excellent proportions and very good or better symmetry and polish ratings.

If you look at this 1.08 carat stone and think to yourself, "that carat size is too small", think about whether you can compromise by reducing other properties, for example clarity in order to get for a bigger diamond.

SI stands for Slightly Included; that means this SI1 stone contains inclusions which are definitely visible at 10 x magnification and possibly to the naked eye, but which offer the potential for bargains if they are not.
