Quick and Easy Buying Guide

Carat weight: 1 carat = 200 milligrams = 6.5 mm diameter. Doubling weight doesn't double diameter.

Diamond clarity: FL/IF/VVS/VS = super expensive, near perfect. SI = best value if you can check a photo for obvious inclusions (defects).

Color: D-G = colorless, expensive, only if you have money to burn. H-J = best value. Can go lower in gold metal settings than white metal.

Cut: Better cut ratings let more light into a diamond, making it sparkle more. Very important property, don't skimp here.

Set a budget and minimum cut (Premium). Go J color for gold and I/H for white metals. Go searching for SI1/SI2 clarity diamonds at James Allen. Pick a diamond with small/no inclusions. Choose a ring setting and buy it risk-free (60-day returns).

Do not ignore diamond characteristics outside the four Cs, for example girdle thickness - it can be important for reasons discussed in my girdle thickness article. A G color diamond such as this one is a good option balancing white pureness and budgetary considerations. If you've got some dollars to spend but do not want to splurge unnecessarily, this is a great color range to look in. The size of this diamond is 1.25 carats - but make sure you look for the other diamonds for sale with that same 1.25 weight which may have a more desirable combination of properties and price.

While not quite as perfect a cut as Hearts & Arrows, the Ideal cut of this particular diamond results in it being significantly cheaper, because you're not forking out money for a "perfectly" cut diamond.

This SI1 clarity stone represents potential great value, with the proviso it is eye clean. You can go over the high resolution photo closely to work out whether the diamond presents well from on top, which;this is where the diamond will mostly be viewed from. In analyzing the $7730 cost for this diamond, put in some thought into whether you need all the properties to be as good as they are.
