Quick and Easy Buying Guide
Carat weight: 1 carat = 200 milligrams = 6.5 mm diameter. Doubling weight doesn't double diameter.
Diamond clarity: FL/IF/VVS/VS = super expensive, near perfect. SI = best value if you can check a photo for obvious inclusions (defects).
Color: D-G = colorless, expensive, only if you have money to burn. H-J = best value. Can go lower in gold metal settings than white metal.
Cut: Better cut ratings let more light into a diamond, making it sparkle more. Very important property, don't skimp here.
Set a budget and minimum cut (Premium). Go J color for gold and I/H for white metals. Go searching for SI1/SI2 clarity diamonds at James Allen. Pick a diamond with small/no inclusions. Choose a ring setting and buy it risk-free (60-day returns).
1.62 Carat F Color VS2 Clarity Ideal Cut Round Cut Diamond
An F color diamond like this diamond will present as pure white, unless you hold it side by side with a diamond of D color and in this situation even then it will be hard to tell for most amateurs.

If you look at this 1.62 carat stone and immediately say, "that stone is too small", consider whether you can compromise by reducing other properties, for example clarity in order to go for a larger diamond. Several companies will provide an Ideal cut diamond cut grading, and these diamonds are usually (as is the situation here) perfect in terms of proportions and the overall shape.
The chance in color between any neighbouring colors from the D-E-F color range is only detectable in a lab, meaning this F color diamond is indistinguishable when compared with diamonds rated one color either side of it.
Weighing up the $17000 price for this diamond, put in some thought into whether you need all the properties to be as good as they are.
VS stands for Very Slightly Included - this VS2 clarity diamond contains some smaller inclusions that may or may not be visible at 10x magnification, but rarely visible with the naked eye - however it can happen occasionally. Girdle thickness (for this diamond the girdle is "Medium to slightly thick") can have an important role in the size presented by the diamond, as is explained in my article about girdle thickness.
