Quick and Easy Buying Guide

Carat weight: 1 carat = 200 milligrams = 6.5 mm diameter. Doubling weight doesn't double diameter.

Diamond clarity: FL/IF/VVS/VS = super expensive, near perfect. SI = best value if you can check a photo for obvious inclusions (defects).

Color: D-G = colorless, expensive, only if you have money to burn. H-J = best value. Can go lower in gold metal settings than white metal.

Cut: Better cut ratings let more light into a diamond, making it sparkle more. Very important property, don't skimp here.

Set a budget and minimum cut (Premium). Go J color for gold and I/H for white metals. Go searching for SI1/SI2 clarity diamonds at James Allen. Pick a diamond with small/no inclusions. Choose a ring setting and buy it risk-free (60-day returns).

There isn't any real reason for going up to a VVS1 clarity rating - the SI1 clarity of this diamond is enough, but be sure that the diamond presents as eye-clean; this can be determined from the photo.

To the unassisted human eye, this F color diamond by itself appears pure white - there isn't a way to detect any color in it using only the naked eye without nearby diamonds, or to differentiate it from others within the colorless range. Don't neglect properties beside the four Cs, for example girdle thickness - it can be important due to reasons discussed in my girdle thickness article. Many different companies will offer an Ideal cut diamond cut grading, and these diamonds are usually (as is the case here) perfect in terms of proportions and the general shape.

The carat weight of this diamond is 1.66 carats - but make sure you check out the other diamonds for sale with a similar 1.66 weight that may have a more desirable combination of properties and price. For $13970, if you've done your shopping properly you should have a nice stone; ensure that you are harsh in your judgement as you look at this diamond. This SI1 clarity stone is a potential great bargain, providing it is eye clean. Try examining the high resolution photo in detail to check whether the diamond presents well from above, which;this is where it will mostly be viewed from.
