Quick and Easy Buying Guide

Carat weight: 1 carat = 200 milligrams = 6.5 mm diameter. Doubling weight doesn't double diameter.

Diamond clarity: FL/IF/VVS/VS = super expensive, near perfect. SI = best value if you can check a photo for obvious inclusions (defects).

Color: D-G = colorless, expensive, only if you have money to burn. H-J = best value. Can go lower in gold metal settings than white metal.

Cut: Better cut ratings let more light into a diamond, making it sparkle more. Very important property, don't skimp here.

Set a budget and minimum cut (Premium). Go J color for gold and I/H for white metals. Go searching for SI1/SI2 clarity diamonds at James Allen. Pick a diamond with small/no inclusions. Choose a ring setting and buy it risk-free (60-day returns).

An untrained eye won't see the color in this G color diamond, except if the stone is held up against a diamond with say a D color rating (something to think about if you're going for a 3 stone ring). SI is short for for Slightly Included, which means this SI1 stone has inclusions that are definitely visible at 10 x magnification and may often be visible to the naked eye, but which offer the opportunity for significant price discounts if they're not. This diamond has a girdle described as "Medium to slightly thick, faceted", which can have a role in the size and sparkle of a diamond, as explained in my diamond girdle article. While not quite as perfect a cut as Hearts & Arrows, the Ideal cut of this diamond results in it being significantly cheaper, because you're not forking out money for a "perfectly" cut diamond. Place this 1.80 carat size in perspective as you weigh up your diamond choices - there are going to be other diamonds in the same size range that can provide more in terms of their price and characteristics.

In analyzing the $15670 cost for this diamond, make sure you consider whether any of the property qualities are excessive for your needs.
