Quick and Easy Buying Guide

Carat weight: 1 carat = 200 milligrams = 6.5 mm diameter. Doubling weight doesn't double diameter.

Diamond clarity: FL/IF/VVS/VS = super expensive, near perfect. SI = best value if you can check a photo for obvious inclusions (defects).

Color: D-G = colorless, expensive, only if you have money to burn. H-J = best value. Can go lower in gold metal settings than white metal.

Cut: Better cut ratings let more light into a diamond, making it sparkle more. Very important property, don't skimp here.

Set a budget and minimum cut (Premium). Go J color for gold and I/H for white metals. Go searching for SI1/SI2 clarity diamonds at James Allen. Pick a diamond with small/no inclusions. Choose a ring setting and buy it risk-free (60-day returns).

The doubling up of a relatively low cost diamond color of H with a definitely low cost clarity rating of SI1 means you can use the extra money on things like the wedding or honeymoon, always a plus.

This diamond's girdle is "Medium to thick", which can have a role in the size and sparkle of a diamond, as explained in my diamond girdle article. An untrained eye won't see the color in this H color diamond, except if the stone is compared side by side with a diamond with say a D color rating (something to think about if you're going for a 3 stone ring). Consider whether you're really set on the 2.00 carat weight that this diamond is - or whether you are able to stretch to buy a larger rock.

The SI clarity range (which this SI1 clarity diamond is included in) is the place where bargains are found. Try and find a diamond that appears "clean" to the naked eye, either by examining the diamond in person, or by looking at an online high resolution photo of the diamond.

Although not quite as perfect a cut as Hearts & Arrows, the Ideal cut of this diamond results in it being significantly cheaper, because you're not forking out money for a "perfectly" cut diamond.

Weighing up the $17610 cost for this diamond, make sure you consider whether you need all the properties to be as good as they are.
