Quick and Easy Buying Guide

Carat weight: 1 carat = 200 milligrams = 6.5 mm diameter. Doubling weight doesn't double diameter.

Diamond clarity: FL/IF/VVS/VS = super expensive, near perfect. SI = best value if you can check a photo for obvious inclusions (defects).

Color: D-G = colorless, expensive, only if you have money to burn. H-J = best value. Can go lower in gold metal settings than white metal.

Cut: Better cut ratings let more light into a diamond, making it sparkle more. Very important property, don't skimp here.

Set a budget and minimum cut (Premium). Go J color for gold and I/H for white metals. Go searching for SI1/SI2 clarity diamonds at James Allen. Pick a diamond with small/no inclusions. Choose a ring setting and buy it risk-free (60-day returns).

An F color diamond such as this F colored stone will present as pure white, unless you hold it side by side with a diamond of D color and in this situation even then it will be hard to tell for most amateurs.

According to James Allen, the Hearts & Arrows cut is the "ultimate expression of love". Whether that's relevant to you, what choosing a diamond with this cut does indicate is that you are focused about getting the best possible visual appearance out of the diamond. This diamond's pricetag of $1930 puts it firmly in the cheapest group of stones that might be used in an engagement ring setting.

Usually VS2 clarity diamonds are the most affordable "safe" clarity grading for purchasing online without seeing the diamond - you can go to a lower clarity grading but then you need to see a good quality photo showing the diamond to analyze the defects for yourself. F color diamonds are pretty much colorless, meaning they are included in the pure white diamond range.

Take note of this diamond's girdle description - "Thin to medium" - and if you don't know about girdle thickness, go have a read of my short explanation of girdle thicknesses.

If you look at this 0.59 carat stone and think to yourself, "that carat size is too small", consider whether it's possible to compromise by lowering other properties such as color or cut so you can get for a larger diamond.
