Quick and Easy Buying Guide

Carat weight: 1 carat = 200 milligrams = 6.5 mm diameter. Doubling weight doesn't double diameter.

Diamond clarity: FL/IF/VVS/VS = super expensive, near perfect. SI = best value if you can check a photo for obvious inclusions (defects).

Color: D-G = colorless, expensive, only if you have money to burn. H-J = best value. Can go lower in gold metal settings than white metal.

Cut: Better cut ratings let more light into a diamond, making it sparkle more. Very important property, don't skimp here.

Set a budget and minimum cut (Premium). Go J color for gold and I/H for white metals. Go searching for SI1/SI2 clarity diamonds at James Allen. Pick a diamond with small/no inclusions. Choose a ring setting and buy it risk-free (60-day returns).

An F color diamond such as this F colored stone will present as pure white, unless you hold it side by side with a diamond of D color and if you did you probably wouldn't be able to tell anyway.

If you are a careful online purchaser, then this VS2 clarity diamond is relatively safe bet, because it is unlikely to have any inclusions that can be seen by the naked eye. For $11940, you should be getting a nice stone, so make sure you're harsh in your judgement as you look at this diamond. This diamond's Ideal cut rating means it has excellent proportions and very good or better symmetry and polish ratings. Girdle thickness (for this diamond the girdle is "Medium to slightly thick") can have an significant role in the size presented by the diamond, as is explained in my article about girdle thickness. If you're looking at this diamond and thinking to yourself that you want to improve another property of the diamond not related to size, you may wish to reduce the 1.33 carat weight of this diamond.

The difference between any adjacent colors from the D-E-F range can only be detected in a specialist laboratory environment, with the significance that this F color diamond is indistinguishable when compared with diamonds rated only one color grade differently.
