Quick and Easy Buying Guide
Carat weight: 1 carat = 200 milligrams = 6.5 mm diameter. Doubling weight doesn't double diameter.
Diamond clarity: FL/IF/VVS/VS = super expensive, near perfect. SI = best value if you can check a photo for obvious inclusions (defects).
Color: D-G = colorless, expensive, only if you have money to burn. H-J = best value. Can go lower in gold metal settings than white metal.
Cut: Better cut ratings let more light into a diamond, making it sparkle more. Very important property, don't skimp here.
Set a budget and minimum cut (Premium). Go J color for gold and I/H for white metals. Go searching for SI1/SI2 clarity diamonds at James Allen. Pick a diamond with small/no inclusions. Choose a ring setting and buy it risk-free (60-day returns).
For Your Viewing Pleasure: 1.40 Carat F Color VS2 Clarity Ideal Cut Round Cut Diamond
The F color of this diamond means it is colorless, saving you the trouble of going up the extra two color grades (and in the process paying a lot more cash) to buy a D color instead.

Several companies will provide an Ideal cut diamond cut grading, and these diamonds are usually (as is the case here) perfect with respect to proportions and the overall shape. Spending $12120 towards a diamond nets one a diamond well above the cut, like this one. A tip: sanity check that you're happy spending this amount of money on a diamond. VS means Very Slightly Included - this VS2 clarity diamond has some smaller inclusions which may or may not be easy to see under 10x magnification, but almost never visible using just the naked eye - but it can occur occasionally.
To the naked eye, this F color diamond by itself appears completely white and pure - there is no way to detect any color in the diamond utilizing just the human eye without nearby diamonds, or to differentiate it from others within the colorless range. Girdle thickness (for this diamond the girdle is "Thin to slightly thick") can have an significant role in the size presented by the diamond, as is explained in my girdle thickness article. If you're checking out this diamond and considering whether to improve other characteristics of the diamond which don't affect size, think about downgrading the 1.40 carat size of this diamond.
