Quick and Easy Buying Guide

Carat weight: 1 carat = 200 milligrams = 6.5 mm diameter. Doubling weight doesn't double diameter.

Diamond clarity: FL/IF/VVS/VS = super expensive, near perfect. SI = best value if you can check a photo for obvious inclusions (defects).

Color: D-G = colorless, expensive, only if you have money to burn. H-J = best value. Can go lower in gold metal settings than white metal.

Cut: Better cut ratings let more light into a diamond, making it sparkle more. Very important property, don't skimp here.

Set a budget and minimum cut (Premium). Go J color for gold and I/H for white metals. Go searching for SI1/SI2 clarity diamonds at James Allen. Pick a diamond with small/no inclusions. Choose a ring setting and buy it risk-free (60-day returns).

Do not neglect diamond characteristics outside the four Cs, such as girdle thickness - which can be important for reasons discussed in my girdle thickness article. The Ideal cut means the diamond will shine significantly more than lower quality cut diamonds, optimizing attractiveness. Place this 0.78 carat weight in perspective when you weigh up your diamond options - there are going to be other stones of about the same size which may offer more with regards to their cost and characteristics. This G color diamond is a whiter stone than the bottom normal color ratings of J and below; it's a great compromise between money considerations and quality, enabling one to get more in the other Cs of diamonds for example cut rating.

This SI1 clarity diamond represents potential great value, providing it is eye clean. Try examining the high resolution photo in detail to work out if the diamond looks good from on top, which;this is where it will mostly be viewed from. This diamond's $2710 price is a substantial investment for most people, but it does lead to a nicer and bigger stone compared to if you were to only spend a few hundred bucks.
