Quick and Easy Buying Guide

Carat weight: 1 carat = 200 milligrams = 6.5 mm diameter. Doubling weight doesn't double diameter.

Diamond clarity: FL/IF/VVS/VS = super expensive, near perfect. SI = best value if you can check a photo for obvious inclusions (defects).

Color: D-G = colorless, expensive, only if you have money to burn. H-J = best value. Can go lower in gold metal settings than white metal.

Cut: Better cut ratings let more light into a diamond, making it sparkle more. Very important property, don't skimp here.

Set a budget and minimum cut (Premium). Go J color for gold and I/H for white metals. Go searching for SI1/SI2 clarity diamonds at James Allen. Pick a diamond with small/no inclusions. Choose a ring setting and buy it risk-free (60-day returns).

If you look at this 1.01 carat stone and immediately say, "that stone is too small", consider whether it's possible to compromise by reducing other properties, for example color or cut in order to go for a larger diamond. The SI clarity range (which this SI1 clarity diamond is included in) is the happy hunting ground for diamond bargain hunters. Look for a diamond that appears "clean" to the naked eye, either by going over the diamond in person, or by looking at an online enlarged photo showing the stone. For $5270, if you've done your shopping properly you should have a nice stone; ensure that you are plenty critical when you're looking at this stone. If your goal in buying a diamond is to get the biggest diamond possible, you can reduce any requirements on other properties of the diamond, such as cut. This Good cut diamond will be much cheaper than higher grade cuts, although at the cost of decreased optical appearance. The difference between any adjacent colors from the D-E-F range can only be detected in a specialist laboratory environment, meaning this F color diamond is indistinguishable from diamonds rated only one color grade differently.
