Quick and Easy Buying Guide
Carat weight: 1 carat = 200 milligrams = 6.5 mm diameter. Doubling weight doesn't double diameter.
Diamond clarity: FL/IF/VVS/VS = super expensive, near perfect. SI = best value if you can check a photo for obvious inclusions (defects).
Color: D-G = colorless, expensive, only if you have money to burn. H-J = best value. Can go lower in gold metal settings than white metal.
Cut: Better cut ratings let more light into a diamond, making it sparkle more. Very important property, don't skimp here.
Set a budget and minimum cut (Premium). Go J color for gold and I/H for white metals. Go searching for SI1/SI2 clarity diamonds at James Allen. Pick a diamond with small/no inclusions. Choose a ring setting and buy it risk-free (60-day returns).
Pick for Tonight 0.72 Carat F Color VS1 Clarity Good Cut Round Cut Diamond
This VS1 clarity diamond is a slight improvement over a VS2 clarity diamond - the higher rating is given when there are fewer or smaller inclusions, or when the inclusion is positioned such that it is less degrading to the appearance of the diamond (hidden).

This diamond has a girdle described as "Medium to thick, faceted", which plays a role in the size and sparkle of the diamond, as written about in my diamond girdle page. The Good cut of this diamond is the bottom cut grading offered by James Allen. If your focus is on other qualities such as diamond color and carat size, then this is probably a sacrifice you're going to have to make.
At a pricetag of $3040, this diamond is smack-bang in the middle range of diamonds used for diamond engagement rings. Remember to cast a glance over nearby carat sizes around the 0.72 carat weight this diamond has, because in doing so your choices regarding other diamond properties can become available. The difference between any adjacent colors in the D-E-F range is only detectable in a lab, with the significance that this F color diamond is not distinguishable from diamonds rated one color either side of it.
Although this VS1 clarity diamond will almost certaintly be "eye-clean", if you're looking to save some money, try checking out SI clarity diamonds. You can manually pick a diamond that is eye-clean in a photo or when seen in the flesh.
I never worry about diets. The only carrots that interest me are the number of carats in a diamond. Mae West .
