Quick and Easy Buying Guide

Carat weight: 1 carat = 200 milligrams = 6.5 mm diameter. Doubling weight doesn't double diameter.

Diamond clarity: FL/IF/VVS/VS = super expensive, near perfect. SI = best value if you can check a photo for obvious inclusions (defects).

Color: D-G = colorless, expensive, only if you have money to burn. H-J = best value. Can go lower in gold metal settings than white metal.

Cut: Better cut ratings let more light into a diamond, making it sparkle more. Very important property, don't skimp here.

Set a budget and minimum cut (Premium). Go J color for gold and I/H for white metals. Go searching for SI1/SI2 clarity diamonds at James Allen. Pick a diamond with small/no inclusions. Choose a ring setting and buy it risk-free (60-day returns).

Most consumers won't notice the color in this G color diamond, except if the stone is held up against a higher color grade diamond (for multistone rings this is important). This diamond's girdle is "Medium to slightly thick", which can have a role in the size and sparkle of the diamond, as written about in my diamond girdle page. For any diamond, a price of $630 really places it amongst the lowest price group of diamonds, especially in the context of engagement rings.

Many different diamond sellers will offer an Ideal cut diamond cut grading, and these diamonds are almost always (as is the case here) perfect with respect to proportions and the general shape. VS means Very Slightly Included - this VS1 clarity diamond has some smaller inclusions which might or might not be easy to see under 10x magnification, but are rarely visible using just the naked eye - however it can happen on the odd occasion. Through decreasing the carat weight of this stone (0.33 carats), you may be able to save a substantial amount of money which can go towards other expenses.
