Quick and Easy Buying Guide
Carat weight: 1 carat = 200 milligrams = 6.5 mm diameter. Doubling weight doesn't double diameter.
Diamond clarity: FL/IF/VVS/VS = super expensive, near perfect. SI = best value if you can check a photo for obvious inclusions (defects).
Color: D-G = colorless, expensive, only if you have money to burn. H-J = best value. Can go lower in gold metal settings than white metal.
Cut: Better cut ratings let more light into a diamond, making it sparkle more. Very important property, don't skimp here.
Set a budget and minimum cut (Premium). Go J color for gold and I/H for white metals. Go searching for SI1/SI2 clarity diamonds at James Allen. Pick a diamond with small/no inclusions. Choose a ring setting and buy it risk-free (60-day returns).

The SI clarity range (which this SI1 clarity diamond is included in) is the place where bargains are found. Try and find a diamond that is "clean" to the naked eye, either by going over the diamond in person, or by checking out an online enlarged photo showing the stone. Although not quite as perfect a cut as Hearts & Arrows, the Ideal cut of this diamond means it is significantly cheaper, because you're not forking out money for a "perfectly" cut diamond.
Spending $6040 towards a diamond nets one a well above average diamond, like this one. Just be sure that you and your partner are happy spending this amount of money on a diamond. The size of this diamond is 1.10 carats - but make sure you look for the other diamonds for sale with a similar 1.10 weight which may have a more desirable combination of properties and price. Most consumers won't see the color in this H color diamond, unless the stone is compared side by side with a diamond with say a D color rating (something to think about if you're going for a 3 stone ring). Pay attention to this diamond's girdle description - "Thin to medium" - and if you don't know about girdle thickness, try reading my girdle thickness article.
