Quick and Easy Buying Guide

Carat weight: 1 carat = 200 milligrams = 6.5 mm diameter. Doubling weight doesn't double diameter.

Diamond clarity: FL/IF/VVS/VS = super expensive, near perfect. SI = best value if you can check a photo for obvious inclusions (defects).

Color: D-G = colorless, expensive, only if you have money to burn. H-J = best value. Can go lower in gold metal settings than white metal.

Cut: Better cut ratings let more light into a diamond, making it sparkle more. Very important property, don't skimp here.

Set a budget and minimum cut (Premium). Go J color for gold and I/H for white metals. Go searching for SI1/SI2 clarity diamonds at James Allen. Pick a diamond with small/no inclusions. Choose a ring setting and buy it risk-free (60-day returns).

If you're buying blind on the Internet, then VS1 clarity is really the lowestclarity rating you should consider without running a significant risk of picking up a diamond with eye-visible defects. For $18000, you should be getting a nice stone; ensure that you are harsh in your judgement when you're looking at this diamond. The size of this stone is 1.52 carats - be sure to look for the other diamonds for sale with a similar 1.52 weight which may have a better combinations of properties and price. This diamond's girdle is "Medium", which can have a impact on the shine and apparently width of the diamond, as written about in my diamond girdle page. The chance in color between any adjacent colors from the D-E-F range is only detectable in a lab, with the significance that this F color diamond is indistinguishable from diamonds rated one color either side of it.

The Ideal cut means the diamond will sparkle significantly more in comparison to lower quality cut diamonds, optimizing attractiveness.
