Carat weight: 1 carat = 200 milligrams = 6.5 mm diameter. Doubling weight doesn't double diameter.
Diamond clarity: FL/IF/VVS/VS = super expensive, near perfect. SI = best value if you can check a photo for obvious inclusions (defects).
Color: D-G = colorless, expensive, only if you have money to burn. H-J = best value. Can go lower in gold metal settings than white metal.
Cut: Better cut ratings let more light into a diamond, making it sparkle more. Very important property, don't skimp here.

Looking carefully under a scope at an SI1 clarity diamond in person or finding a high resolution image of it (as in this case) will help you avoid big inclusions that are picked up by the eye.

The G color of this diamond offers value for your dollar, since it isn't a member of the expensive premium color grades D-F. If you look at this 1.20 carat stone and think to yourself, "that carat size is too small", consider whether you can compromise by lowering other properties such as clarity in order to get for a larger diamond.
