Carat weight: 1 carat = 200 milligrams = 6.5 mm diameter. Doubling weight doesn't double diameter.
Diamond clarity: FL/IF/VVS/VS = super expensive, near perfect. SI = best value if you can check a photo for obvious inclusions (defects).
Color: D-G = colorless, expensive, only if you have money to burn. H-J = best value. Can go lower in gold metal settings than white metal.
Cut: Better cut ratings let more light into a diamond, making it sparkle more. Very important property, don't skimp here.

Budget Round Shape SI 1.00 Carat Diamonds
There are a lot of diamonds to choose from at the magical 1 carat mark. The first is cheap but has a significant defect at the center of the diamond, and is a lower SI2 clarity rating.

The second diamond has a small defect at the center of the diamond which might not be visible to the naked eye. A good mid-range option with the Ideal cut.
If you don't want to have any inclusions or defects, then the third diamond, at over $5000, is what you'd go for. Some of that extra price tag is because it's also the largest of the three diamonds, at just under one and a quarter carats.
