Quick and Easy Buying Guide

Carat weight: 1 carat = 200 milligrams = 6.5 mm diameter. Doubling weight doesn't double diameter.

Diamond clarity: FL/IF/VVS/VS = super expensive, near perfect. SI = best value if you can check a photo for obvious inclusions (defects).

Color: D-G = colorless, expensive, only if you have money to burn. H-J = best value. Can go lower in gold metal settings than white metal.

Cut: Better cut ratings let more light into a diamond, making it sparkle more. Very important property, don't skimp here.

Set a budget and minimum cut (Premium). Go J color for gold and I/H for white metals. Go searching for SI1/SI2 clarity diamonds at James Allen. Pick a diamond with small/no inclusions. Choose a ring setting and buy it risk-free (60-day returns).

G Color VS1 Diamonds

Right on the verge of truly colorless, and with quite a good clarity rating, G color VS1 diamonds are a high quality option all around, assuming you pick an appropriate cut.

Some will tell you that a G color is actually pretty much a colorless diamond, and if you set it in yellow gold jewellery you’re not going to be able to tell otherwise. Even in a platinum or white gold setting, you’re going to be hard pressed to detect any color at all.

Pricewise G color puts you firmly between the super expensive “truly” colorless diamonds (D, E and F color), and the budget near colorless range (I and J, and to a lesser extent H).

Be sure to choose the cut carefully, as you wouldn’t want to shortchange the beautiful pure white color and clarity of a G color VS1 diamond by getting a cruddy cut, which will significantly degrade the optical qualities of the diamond and leave you with one that is white but which doesn’t sparkle particularly well – something to avoid I’m sure you’ll agree!

Down below is a list of diamonds that fall into this G color VS1 category, listed once again by the day in which they were found.
