Carat weight: 1 carat = 200 milligrams = 6.5 mm diameter. Doubling weight doesn't double diameter.
Diamond clarity: FL/IF/VVS/VS = super expensive, near perfect. SI = best value if you can check a photo for obvious inclusions (defects).
Color: D-G = colorless, expensive, only if you have money to burn. H-J = best value. Can go lower in gold metal settings than white metal.
Cut: Better cut ratings let more light into a diamond, making it sparkle more. Very important property, don't skimp here.
Set a budget and minimum cut (Premium). Go J color for gold and I/H for white metals. Go searching for SI1/SI2 clarity diamonds at James Allen. Pick a diamond with small/no inclusions. Choose a ring setting and buy it risk-free (60-day returns).
Budget Round Shape SI 2.00 Carat Diamonds
2 carats is where the "big boys" of diamonds start to appear, at 8 mm in diameter and upwards. The first diamond has a number of small defects, such as at the far right of the diamond.

Adding more than 2 grand to the price gets you the second diamond on the list, which is pretty much eye-clean. Not sure the extra two grand is worth it given the same Premium cut rating.
With another 2 grand more, you get the third and last diamond on the list, which has an improved Ideal cut, and no eye-visible inclusions. Seems like a lot extra to pay compared to the first diamond, but it would appear as a defect-free diamond to the naked eye. Hard to pick a winner here.
