Carat weight: 1 carat = 200 milligrams = 6.5 mm diameter. Doubling weight doesn't double diameter.
Diamond clarity: FL/IF/VVS/VS = super expensive, near perfect. SI = best value if you can check a photo for obvious inclusions (defects).
Color: D-G = colorless, expensive, only if you have money to burn. H-J = best value. Can go lower in gold metal settings than white metal.
Cut: Better cut ratings let more light into a diamond, making it sparkle more. Very important property, don't skimp here.

0.54 Carat Diamonds
A diamond with a size of 0.54 carats weighs in normal everyday weight units exactly 108 mg. Carat size does not equate exactly to a certain width of diamond, because the diamond may be short and fat, or tall and lanky, meaning 0.54 carats of diamond will not always be synonymous with 5.30 mm of diamond.

In evaluating the value of a 0.54 carat diamond, one thing you can do is work out the precise cost per carat of diamond. Diamond size means both the carat weight of the diamond and the width of the diamond, and the width of the diamond increases at a much slower rate compared to the carat weight of the diamond.

Diamond carat size doesn't narrow down your list of diamonds very much, what you really need to do is consider what the other desirable properties of the diamond, decide how good these properties have to be for your situation, and then search for diamonds which meet all of these property requirements at the same time. Not all gemstones have the same density, leading to an often confusing fact that when you look at a one carat diamond and a one carat ruby, apart from differences in cut they will probably appear different in size due to the difference in their density.
A large diamond which has a huge crack down the middle, or alternatively a big yucky looking inclusion, is not a good look - it looks like someone has gone for size and sacrificed all the other desirable properties of the diamond. Clarity, for example, can be just as important in picking a diamond.
