Quick and Easy Buying Guide

Carat weight: 1 carat = 200 milligrams = 6.5 mm diameter. Doubling weight doesn't double diameter.

Diamond clarity: FL/IF/VVS/VS = super expensive, near perfect. SI = best value if you can check a photo for obvious inclusions (defects).

Color: D-G = colorless, expensive, only if you have money to burn. H-J = best value. Can go lower in gold metal settings than white metal.

Cut: Better cut ratings let more light into a diamond, making it sparkle more. Very important property, don't skimp here.

Set a budget and minimum cut (Premium). Go J color for gold and I/H for white metals. Go searching for SI1/SI2 clarity diamonds at James Allen. Pick a diamond with small/no inclusions. Choose a ring setting and buy it risk-free (60-day returns).

2 Carat Diamond Studs

2 carat diamond studs are really nice diamond studs with a very good sized diamond. You have to pay for all the size however, but if you're willing to you will be very happy with the result.

Your local jewellery store will properly not have a large range of pre-made two carat diamond studs as they may be a little outside the normal range of stud purchases.

However, you can easily find a pair using one of the major online diamond retailers such as James Allen or Blue Nile.

When you are talking about a pair of diamonds where each diamond is one carat, you have the option of picking your own diamonds for the diamond stud earrings.

You can use the online diamond search tool offered by these companies to find a pair of matching diamonds with the same clarity and colour ratings to go in your diamond studs.

I just went through the process at James Allen and picked the simplest pair of diamond stud settings, which had a base price of $200.

I then set the search tool to look for diamonds in the carat range between 0.96 and 1.02, of J colour and with an SI1 clarity rating. The tool found me a few options. I then picked a pair of diamonds which had the best appearance to the eye from the photos and selected them to be added to my diamond stud earrings.

The total price? $8760 US. So you can see that the price jump from one carat diamond studs to 2 carat diamond studs is quite significant - much more than a doubling in price.
