Quick and Easy Buying Guide

Carat weight: 1 carat = 200 milligrams = 6.5 mm diameter. Doubling weight doesn't double diameter.

Diamond clarity: FL/IF/VVS/VS = super expensive, near perfect. SI = best value if you can check a photo for obvious inclusions (defects).

Color: D-G = colorless, expensive, only if you have money to burn. H-J = best value. Can go lower in gold metal settings than white metal.

Cut: Better cut ratings let more light into a diamond, making it sparkle more. Very important property, don't skimp here.

Set a budget and minimum cut (Premium). Go J color for gold and I/H for white metals. Go searching for SI1/SI2 clarity diamonds at James Allen. Pick a diamond with small/no inclusions. Choose a ring setting and buy it risk-free (60-day returns).

1.13 Carat Diamonds

The shallowness of a diamond, which depends on how the diamond has been cut, will affect the relationship between carat weight and diameter of the diamond - because of this reason, 1.13 carat diamonds will only average a width of 6.80 mm, but will not always be precisely this width.

The cost per carat value is a numerical number that provides you with a sense of how much the diamond is worth compared to other diamonds of similar properties.

Another property of the diamond which is important in determining how big the diamond will appear to the naked eye is the girdle thickness of the diamond. A thick girdle well store a lot of the diamonds mass in a place which does not help the diamond appear large.

The width of the diamond grows much more slowly than the carat weight of a diamond.

How much of a change do you think you can detect with the naked eye by going from a 2.00 carat stone to a 1.98 carat stone? I can't, which is why i would recommend checking out the slightly smaller stones due to them often being priced a lot lower than the others, for no really good reason.

Depending on personal preference, people may choose to get a smaller diamond in order to get a higher colour grade, such as d, e or f. It's heartening to know (if you're a billionaire) that there are actually very large diamonds which are colourless, such as the centenary diamond, which is a grade d colour diamond that comes in at the whopping weight of 273 carats. In terms of diamond properties, the carat weight of the diamond should be considered alongside the many other characteristics of the diamond, in order to find a diamond which is balanced and hence not let down by being of poor quality in one of these departments.
