Carat weight: 1 carat = 200 milligrams = 6.5 mm diameter. Doubling weight doesn't double diameter.
Diamond clarity: FL/IF/VVS/VS = super expensive, near perfect. SI = best value if you can check a photo for obvious inclusions (defects).
Color: D-G = colorless, expensive, only if you have money to burn. H-J = best value. Can go lower in gold metal settings than white metal.
Cut: Better cut ratings let more light into a diamond, making it sparkle more. Very important property, don't skimp here.
Set a budget and minimum cut (Premium). Go J color for gold and I/H for white metals. Go searching for SI1/SI2 clarity diamonds at James Allen. Pick a diamond with small/no inclusions. Choose a ring setting and buy it risk-free (60-day returns).

This diamond is in clarity and color respects a quite nice diamond, since it is in the colorless range and also has inclusions which can only generally be visually detected using a 10x scope.

For a diamond, a price of $1870 puts it in the lowest price group of diamonds, especially for engagement rings. Pay attention to this diamond's girdle characteristic - "Medium to slightly thick" - and if you don't know about girdle thickness, go have a read of my short explanation of girdle thicknesses. The size of this diamond is 0.56 carats - but make sure you look for the other diamonds for sale with a similar 0.56 weight which may have a better combinations of properties and price. F color diamonds are pretty much colorless, meaning they are part of the pure white diamond range.
If you're a careful online buyer, then this VS1 clarity diamond is relatively safe bet, since it is unlikely to have any inclusions that are visible to the naked eye.
Although not quite as perfect a cut as Hearts & Arrows, the Ideal cut of this particular diamond means it is significantly cheaper, because you're not paying a premium for a "perfectly" cut diamond.
